Meeting with Vietnam National University–University of Language and International Studies (VNU-ULIS)

6 January 2017 |  The Chinese University of Hong Kong

A six-member delegation from the VNU-ULIS in Vietnam visited the CUHK on 6 January 2017. Prof. Fanny M. Cheung, the Co-Convenor of the GCR, and other members of the GCR, including Prof. Yuen-sang Leung and Prof. Sze-wing Tang, attended the meeting.

Prof. Fanny M. Cheung welcomed the delegation, stressing that the CUHK is keen to establish close collaborations with Belt and Road countries. She mentioned that two international conferences on Hong Kong’s role and collaboration under the BRI were held at CUHK within the last couple of years. She also informed the delegation that the International Symposium on Chinese in the Maritime Silk Road will be held at CUHK on 7–8 April 2017 and that scholars and professors from VNU-ULIS are welcome to attend the Symposium. It is hoped that the Symposium will help to forge a close collaboration between CUHK and VNU-ULIS.

Prof. Yuen-sang Leung gave an introduction on the Faculty of Arts, which covers over ten major areas, with Chinese language and literature, and English language and literature being some of the largest programmes.

Prof. Sze-wing Tang proposed collaboration in research, such as in compiling databases on linguistics that can be shared by researchers from both universities, and in other activities that can promote research on the languages of Belt and Road countries. Members of the GCR and representatives from VNU-ULIS have actively exchanged ideas about further collaboration.
