Guest lecture on the Belt and Road Initiative and the Role of Hong Kong

6 August 2019 | The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Dr Victor Zheng, GCR Co-Convenor, gave a guest lecture to students from more than 20 universities in mainland China. The lecture consisted of two themes: The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and development in the era of globalization; and The opportunities and challenges brought by the BRI to Hong Kong.

In the first part, Dr Zheng explained the power dynamics of the world, the road of China’s modernization, and the BRI as an extension of the “China Model”. The second part of the lecture focused on analysing the role of Hong Kong in the BRI, particularly in a social atmosphere when social trust has weakened and social conflicts are becoming more intense. The BRI may bring about another turning point in history and opportunities should not be missed.
